Becoming a Hypnotherapist

Question
I'm interested in becoming a Hypnotherapist. Can you tell me about licensing, etc?

Answer
I don't know what state you are in to answer the question of licensing. In this state of Washington one must be registered as a counselor and licensed to practice, as well as have a business license to open an office. Most people mean, by clinical HT, that you have had extensive training beyond the basics of being a certified hypnotherapist. Some states prefer that you call yourself a hypnotist, and not refer to therapy, and other states don't seem to care. States vary on what they require. In this state, the only state certification is for a couple of types of counselors, not for HT's. Certification usually has to do with the time you put into a particular school and its certification of your work and its completion, not what the particular state names you. In this state, I call myself a counseling hypnotherapist, even though I am certified as a clinical HT by my school, and was an CHt (Certified HT) by a previous school. I also have a Master of Science degree in Clinical HT. The main thing about your preparation is that you select a qualified school that insists on at least 150 hours of study and class time before certifying you. Personally, I believe at least 100 of those needs to be in a classroom on-site, and needs to include hands-on practice. If you can also take some psychology courses, all the better. Good luck in your endeavor to be in a highly interesting and fulfilling profession.
