ADD & ADHD Children

Question

I’m in charge of six young male students who are labeled behavioral students with symptoms of ADD and ADDH. They are great, bright kids in a classroom situation.  Any suggestions or scripts you can recommend that I can weave in as a story in my role as a teacher within a conservative agency?

Answer

You're in such a great position for story-telling, and what a good way to reach such kids.  Stories in which they go on adventures, either as individuals or in a group, should work well, especially adventures where they have to go stealthily, or be very quiet in order to do or see what they want to do or see.  This allows them, subconsciously, to learn control in both active and quiet activity.

Most of the stories I create come to me in the midst of working with specific children, in which I weave together things that are particular to them, often an adventure in which the child is empowered to conquer whatever concerns them. You might find out from each of the kids (taking down notes) what their favorite things are: colors, food, pets, animals, friends, plants/flowers, activities, etc.  Then use those to tell different stories in which a different child is highlighted each time in a story you create.  You don't have to use the children's names; they'll recognize themselves by the favorite things. Hope that's somewhat helpful; I'll be interested in how you do.
