Can Hypnosis be Used in a Negative Way
Question
Is it possible for a hypnotist to use hypnosis in a negative way? Is it similar to any kind of mind control?
Answer
In mind control, a person has to have been worn down with no sleep, drugs, living in bare subsistence and browbeaten regularly. I tell clients who are concerned about this that I won't need to use any of those tactics for them to get to their goals. Basically, a hypnotist can't make you do what you don't want to do, nor do anything you wouldn't be willing to do in a full waking state. Even in stage entertainment, if someone is doing silly things it's because they don't feel threatened, they trust the hypnotist, and find it fun. If the hypnotist asked the group he was working with to "pretend" to take off their clothing, they probably would pretend to do so, once they've agreed to the fun. But, it the hypnotist left out only one word by requesting that everyone on the stage remove their clothing, they'd quit playing the game (unless someone was an extreme exhibitionist.). This is because the hypnotist would have crossed the boundary from embarrassingly funny to "humiliation." And no one likes to be humiliated.
