How the Books Happened

Recently, as I was working with a 12 year old girl who was having a lot of trouble in school and didn't feel very good about herself, I found myself creating a process (and script) off the top of my head, to help her read faster and remember more of what she reads. It took only that that one session to break through the reading problem. Another session with her helped her conquer her problem with writing, and another with her shyness in meeting other children. In each case, the problem was conquered with one session.

The request for copies of these sessions was overwhelming. Because of it, I decided to be more intentional about turning on my tape recorder whenever I had these "flights of fancy." Not long after, I was asked to be keynote speaker for a convention, the theme of which was "Hypnosis and Children." The combination of individual script requests and the convention deadline led to a script pull-together, which became Volume I of GREAT ESCAPES.

As I was nearing completion of that volume, it struck me that most of those at the convention would be interested in scripts for adults and youth, as well. For several years, upon request, I had been sending my scripts to various counselors who were encountering specific problems with clients. The combination of increasing requests and the convention birthed Volume II of GREAT ESCAPES.

Design and Content

Other than the age levels being addressed, the major difference between the two volumes is that, while Volume II is primarily for use by therapists, Volume I can just as easily be used by parents, teachers and others who work with children on an individual or group basis, in the counseling room, the home, a meeting room or the classroom.

The scripts are eclectic. Some use visual language and others non-visual. Some are story-like and some are straight-forward hypnotic suggestions. Some are brief. Some are long. There are pages of affirmations, inductions, releasing methods, visualizations, post-hypnotic signals, and "prescriptions" for specific problems. The scripts are laid out in a way that allows therapists and others to slow down vocal speed, shorten content when desired, skip paragraphs and sections, adapt, and even take off on their own flights of imagination, with ease.

The books are designed for maximum flexibility by any therapist. They are in 3-ring form, making it easy to index according to individual preference; and allowing for additional scripts later. Each script stands alone, so it can be moved to other locations in the book, or to another notebook without resorting to a copier.

I am using your scripts in my practice, and they are sensitive and superb!
Judy E. Pearson, PhD, Ex. Dir., National Board for Certifying Clinical Hypnotherapists

Many thanks for the scripts (Great Escapes Volume 1). They are some of the gentlest and most delightful that I have come across for children. The waterfall and passageways leave plenty of scope for adaptation to many situations. The Great Escapes Volume 2 scripts have a deep underlying strength to them - messages of hope, courage, the deep seated belief that change can happen and will happen, all cradled in comforting words using a gentle Ericksonian permissiveness and respect. All of them have been carefully structured to be creatively adapted.
Denise Ghalebi, Hypnotherapist, United Kingdom

Excellent Material! Fine work! I will be recommending them to my hypnosis students, (and) am going to include your work as part of the list of resources (in my book on medical hypnosis).
Dr. Bill Breuer, Director, The Centre for Multidisciplinary Healthcare, Louisville, KY

Del, your script books have proved to be such an asset to me in my hypnotherapy work. The scripts are so life affirming. I resonate with each script and find myself having difficulty choosing which one would be "most appropriate." It seems to me that you have taken my own thoughts and feelings and put them into words for me. Your creativity has saved me time and effort and allowed me to put my energy in other places. I love how you put the scripts into notebooks. They are so easy to use that way. Blessings!
Kay Nuyens, Hypnotherapist, Grand Haven, Michigan

What a treat! A new Del script! I just used your "Problem-Solving" induction again last night with a client. It's getting to be one of my staples.
Hypnotherapist, California

Del, I have used the scripts on myself and find them very original and effective. Thanks so much for sharing them with me.
Counselor, Utah

Del, My wife and I used the "Water Signal" as a joint meditation. We read alternate paragraphs aloud as we sat overlooking our beautiful garden pool. It was a great thing to do. When we sit at the stone table for lunch, we can feel the peace your thoughts have added. Thank you, thank you.

Hi Del, I've used the "Learn to Relax and Reduce Stress" and my clients love it.

In-Depth Book Review

By Judith E. Pearson, Ph.D.
National Board for Certification of Clinical Hypnotherapists (NBCCH) Newsletter

Great Escapes is a two-volume collection of hypnotic scripts.  Volume 1: Transforming Children's Lives Through the Means of Visualization, Hypnosis, and Other Imaginative Means is for working with children.  Volume 2: Assisting Adults and Youth to Obtain What They Desire is for adults. The scripts are arranged in a three-ring notebook so that readers can sequence them according to individual needs, remove one or two for a session, or add scripts from other sources. The entire collection is over 70 scripts that can be combined for trance induction, change work, direct suggestions and emergence from trance.

In Volume 1, Morrill has evidently mastered the challenge of hypnotherapy with children. She advises that when working with children, you need not discuss "hypnosis" or "visualization," but simply talk about having a quiet time for using the imagination. Children do not exhibit trance as most adults do. They may often "wiggle their bodies around," but they are listening, nevertheless.

The scripts address specific confidence and self-esteem, making friends, athletic performance, academic skills, and sleep habits. Some of the scripts speak to problem-solving and "dumping" the past. The imagery is taken from nature: animals, the seashore, sunshine, the ocean, stars, trees, gardens, fire and water, and rainbows. The language is simple enough that a child can understand it, but engaging enough to appeal to adults as well. Her scripts are imaginative and charming, inviting children to access their internal resources.

Volume 2 has scripts for issues such as fear, health, athletic performance, self esteem and confidence, and habit control. The scripts include guided imagery, mental rehearsal, positive affirmations, and post-hypnotic suggestions, using hypnotic language patterns such as splitting (i.e., differentiating the conscious and unconscious mind), analogy, metaphor, and implied cause and effect. The scripts are sufficiently vague to invite transderivational search and individual interpretation.

As with all prepared scripts, clinicians can and should take care to adapt the wording to personal preferences and the needs and personality of each client. Overall, Del Morrill has done a fine job of producing scripts that are uplifting and respectful of the listener.

She is a licensed counselor and hypnotherapist, who has used hypnosis in her practice since 1986. She is a member of several professional organizations for hypnotherapists and in 1997 the International Hypnosis Hall of Fame nominated her Woman of the Year. She owns and operates Transitions, Incorporated a Center for Counseling and Hypnosis in Tacoma, Washington.

Judith Pearson, Ph.D. is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified Hypnotherapist, and NLP Trainer, practicing in Springfield, VA.
