Possession Under Hypnosis?

Question
I know individuals whose faith leads them to believe that people in hypnosis are susceptible to being possessed by a dark entity. Do you have any knowledge of individuals being possessed while under hypnosis?

Answer
This is a question which is often raised by more conservative Christians. I have never in my 14 years of using hypnosis with my clients had the experience of someone becoming open to spirits or the satanic during the sessions, or afterwards. In all the reading on hypnosis and hypnotherapy I have done, I have never read of any such occurrence. I believe the reason some people have this fear is that they think hypnotism is something someone is doing TO you, rather than understanding it as a trance stage between being fully awake and fully asleep. This is not much different from the ideas other clients have about hypnosis. They need to understand the hypnotic state as being quite normal, and something we all do every day. It is no different from being absorbed (or entranced) by anything else--television, advertising, driving on "neutral," daydreaming, etc. If someone you are seeing is fearful of this, or has had someone tell them to "watch out," then, for their own sense of security and trust in you, I would explain what hypnotic states are. Then I would call upon their angels, or spiritual guide, or Jesus, or whatever else is fitting for that particular client, before doing the rest of your hypnotic suggestions.
