How Many Sessions to Stop Smoking

Question
I have never smoked and actually have a bad attitude toward smokers. My teacher said there wasn't any need to do more than one session. But I feel one should look for the cause. Am I taking this too seriously?

Answer
I prefer two sessions, with a booster within the year, if ever needed. (I tell my clients that very few people ever do, but it's available should they ever feel the need for additional support to stay with their decision.) In the first session with a client, I do an intake to get info on when and why they started smoking (or chewing tobacco), why they continue to do so, and the benefits to them for quitting and becoming a non-smoker (non-tobacco chewer). I use this information in the next session. After the intake, I follow with my Problem/Solution finding script (In GE II, but also free to you by using the link in the next column). This is designed to change any imprints that cause the need to smoke or may in any way block the person from quitting. In the second session, a week later, I use my "Stop Smoking without Gaining Weight" script, which seems to be quite effective. (You'll find it in my GREAT ESCAPES Volume II.) If the client does need a booster later, or the two sessions hasn't been effective enough for them, then I use one of my other scripts, such as "The Last Smoke", or "Supporting the Non-Smoker". Scripts are also available for those who chew tobacco. (These, plus the layout of my Smoking Cessation program, will be in my GREAT ESCAPES III, due out before the end of 2001). By the way, the scripts also work well for marijuana and other such smoking.
