Nervous Habits

May 2007

DEAR DEL,
How does hypnosis control long-term habits?  I can’t get my daughter to quit pulling at her hair.  At times, she even pulls it out.  Also, she bites her nails to the quick.  We’ve tried everything we can think of to help her and nothing works!

ANSWER:

Habit control forms a dominant party of the work of most hypnotherapists.  Stop-smoking and weight-control programs are the most recognized.  Some therapists deal with drug, alcohol and gambling addictions.  Most can deal with such things as nail-biting, bed-wetting, hair-pulling, skin-picking and other nervous habits.

Provided the client has consulted the medical community for any physical reason for the habit, the surest way to have such habits permanently stopped is by using hypnosis to root out the cause for it; that is, when did it begin, and for what reason.  From that point on, it’s relatively easy to “reprogram” to handle stress, etc., through some more acceptable means.
